Launchy , the download of the day

Today I am going to share a little productivity tip with you a ‘la 43 Folders by showing you one of my favorite apps . It is one of the million attempts to clone Quicksilver … Everyone knows that none can come close in the other areas … but I think this one equals it in the app launching area … if you don’t follow … I am talking about an application launcher … It is something that with a key combination it pops up a box in which you can type the first few letters of an application then it will launch it for you…and the one that is my very favorite is called Launchy since I have had it my productivity has increased 5x … How can this be you say … well here is a screenshot of my desktop

Yes that is my desktop. where are the icons ? There are no icons. This is because I don’t need them . Why ? This little thing right here.

Launchy

One tap of alt-space and up comes this. It is called Launchy. Besides this one it also comes with tons of other cool skins if you are on windows this is a must have app. But WAIT There is MORE if you call within the next whenever it will even be opensource. That is right , launchy is completely free and opensource. There you have no excuse.

Portable Apps Is at it again

…Ok let me set the stage … I just got a u3 thumb drive …more info Here A u3 drive AutoRuns a menu on start to run Portable Applications Applications that you can run from a ThumbDrive
anyways so … a lot of innovation has come from PortableApps.com … the makers of PortableFirefox and PortableThunderbird John Haller … anyways he has made an awesome portable app called the PortableAppsMenu

It is just like the u3 menu except its FREE and OPEN-SOURCE and its so much more customizable then the u3 menu … also you can customize every aspect of this menu … it comes either pre-stocked with apps such as openoffice , firefox , and thunderbird weighting in at about 90 megs , without openoffice for 30 megs or with no apps and completely customizable for a paltry 1 meg …

as you cIconsan see the menu is very visually appealing . and since its opensource it is completely customizable and redustributable … it also comes with an awsome program called PortableApps backup wich is an opensource backup program to backup your data and settings

…and the BIGGEST difference between this and the u3 launcher is the fact that this does NOT require that you have special hardware you can use any media you want … a usb hard drive , a use thumb drive , an ipod, iriver , zen , psp , digital camera (if you wanted to…) ANYTHING …

You can download many version of this app …but make sure you download them from either the official site PortableApps.com/suite or one of the following urls

  • Download the base version with only PortableApps Backup and PortableApps Menu Here

Themes … Themes …Themes

…I haven’t posted in a week or so …And I haven’t checked the blogofficial wordpress blog …. man the wordpress guys didn’t let me down….they added not one …not two …but THREE new themes ….2 of which I really like …1 being UNsleepAble and the other being K2 there is also a brand new theme I have never even heard of…Gotta check it out’
…if you are not using wordpress I HIGHLY recommend you make the switch :)
Also…with all of these cool new themes …expect my theme to switch regularly

Songbird 0.2 is out …Come ‘n get it

A new media player called Songbird has released a new version
If you have never heard of it …it is a player that is built on the same code as Firefox
It has tons of cool features …and whats more …it just release a mac version too
It is open source and currently in alpha…so its only going to get better…well….the creators can explain it better than I can
So…here you go

and just for fun…here are some cool little songbird buttons…
I really like songbird and Im going to add one of these to my sidebar permanently

Debain to change the name of firefox ? What?

Apparently mozilla has been protective of firefox trademarks lately
which is very uncommon for “free”(as in free speech) software …debain does not aggree with this…they believe that its not really “free”(as in speech) …They plan to change the name of firefox in all of its distros ….Wow….Mozilla WTF? …I never though mozilla would do something like this … Whats next … We switch back to IE ?

Viraptor writes, “Debian is ready to change the name of Firefox in its distributions, beginning with Etch. They say it can be done within a week. The reasons stem from Mozilla’s recent insistence on trademark fidelity and its preferences regarding Firefox patches. Debian doesn’t want to accept the original trademarked fox & globe logo; they don’t see it as really ‘free’ to use. On the other hand, Mozilla doesn’t want Firefox distributed under that name if it lacks the logo. Mozilla also wants Debian patches to be submitted to them before distribution, and claims that’s what others (Red Hat and Novell) are already doing. But some believe development and releases will slow down if distribution-specific patches have to be checked and accepted first. We will surely see more clashes between copyright claims and ‘really free’ distros such as Debian. Ubuntu is also asking similar questions.” No word yet what the new name will be or what the logo will look like.

Back at wordpress

Hmm…remember when I said that I was going “Out on my own” to run my own webserver and drupal…
Well…Im back…and so I come crawling back to WordPress.com
Sure Drupal Might have more features…but its not just about the checks in the boxes
the reason I came back to wordpress is because of the community :) and people actualy read my blog *Gasp*
